Dress for Success gives women confidence and the opportunities to succeed.
The following stories are from women who have participated in the YWCA's program.
Clara Bova, Dress for Success Indianapolis
With one day's notice, Clara Bova was forced to say good-bye to a job that she had held since graduating from high school 22 years before.
A positive and determined woman, Clara went to Mary Riggs Neighborhood Center and learned to type. Though her road to stable employment was rocky, she has landed on her feet. Clara now works for the Mayor's Action Center as a customer service representative. Nicknamed "Miss Happy," it is no secret that Clara loves her job.
Clara is quick to give recognition to those who have helped her this past year, including the Dress for Success Indianapolis team. "Dress for Success makes you feel like a person and feel like you're going to be a success," she says.
"Every time I got a call for a job, I immediately wanted to call Dress for Success Indianapolis and let them know about it," Clara exclaims. "When you get news like that, it's the most important people you want to tell. That's really saying something."
Nedra, Dress for Success Joliet
After moving from Ohio with her three children to care for her recently disabled mother, Nedra needed to find a job that would allow her to support her family and continue her education. Dress for Success Joliet not only gave Nedra an interview suit but also provided her with refresher courses, job interview skills, resume preparation and the confidence to land a job as a medical administrative assistant.
Since then, Nedra has become an active member of the Professional Women's Group which, she says, means being part of a group of women with many talents, goals, aspirations, wisdom and a sense of sisterhood I haven't experienced anywhere else." This support will help Nedra as she works to obtain both a bachelors and masters degree in nursing and achieve her ultimate goal of opening an adult day care center and assisted living facility.
Madeline, Dress for Success Cleveland
Madeline discovered Dress for Success Cleveland after working for many years in the food industry. Dress for Success Cleveland gave her tips on how to impress her potential employers by helping her identify and highlight the client service and business management skills that she developed at her previous job. "Dress for Success Cleveland reaffirmed that I had a lot to offer any company out there," Madeline recalls.
Now working at a client service center, Madeline joined the Professional Women's Group one year ago. "It helps me see all of the positive qualities I possess, and that empowers me to excel not just in the workplace but also in all areas of my life. I want to be the best I can be."
Precilla, Dress for Success Midwest
Out of work, frustrated about the future and down on herself, Precilla was introduced to Dress for Success Midwest by her sister, who was a Professional Women's Group member. And like many other women before her, Precilla realized that it only begins with a suit. "Dress for Success Midwest gave me a whole new attitude and helped me plan my future. I could have never imagined that my life would turn around to become so awesome."
Today, Precilla works as a title examiner and has been a member of the Professional Women's Group for over a year. "The Professional Women's Group gives me a chance to network with other women to talk about work or home, and I learn a lot from the experience of others," she says. "My future is bright, and I can achieve anything!"
